A Tale of Two Companies We are republishing one of our most
popular articles for a limited time. Originally published 03/04/2009
About 65 years ago... ...a small debt burdened
company was begging for a network to broadcast its show. Its target
market was children up to 16 years old (this is my guess). This was
the companies second venture into producing a television series. The
company used both of these shows to finance and promote the building
of another of the companies division. ABC's relationship with this
company dates back to 1953, when enough money was pledged so that the
other business interest could be completed. ABC continued to hold
this companies notes and stock until 1960!
ABC was the network that
decided to air this serial show. ABC, as previously noted, was also a
holder of this companies notes and some stock as well. This show
turned out to be a variety show for children. Paul Williams and
Candice Bergen (Sex and the City - The Movie (Special Edition)
) did not make the cut to be part of this show. Each day
of the week had a special show theme, which was reflected in the
various segments.
The show did run from 1955
to 1959. It ran for an hour each weekday 1955 through 1957 from 5pm
to 6pm. In 1957 and 1958 it aired only ½ hour 5pm to 5:30pm.
The show did air in 1959 for ½ hour – these were shows
from the first two seasons – not new original programs. Then in
1959 this show was canceled by ABC. The company and ABC could not
come to terms with its renewal.
After cancellation ABC would
not air this program and also refused to allow its airing on another
network! This company sought damages via the legal system (boooo!)
and won damages however had to agree that this and another show could
not air on any major network.
As an aside, MidnightOutpost.com is searching for
someone, (probably a woman, but not necessarily) that may be
(probably) attracting ONLY (primarily, really) mommas bois (usually
looking for a girl friend/boy friend relationship), with a
psychology background (or degree), to be the author of articles
written with that (and other) perspective(s). The successful
candidate will be retained to become part owner/partner with
MidnightOutpost.com. If you are interested then, please; Contact Us

In 1962 to 1965, due to
popular demand, this show went into syndication! And again 1975 to
1977!
In 1980 almost all of the
original cast member reunited for a for a TV special in 1980. The
changing landscape of entertainment had this show airing on this
company cable channels from 1983 till 1989!
ABC's dominance carried into
the early 1980s. But by 1985, veteran shows had run their courses,
ABC's ratings and the earnings thus generated reflected this loss of
drive. Under the circumstances, ABC was a ripe takeover target. This
is when, instead of taking on a lot of debt for its own right to
fight a takeover, ABC was taken over by CapCities and became
CapCities/ABC. Capital Cities' announced $3.5 billion purchase of
ABC on March 18, 1985, stunned the media industry, as ABC was some
four times bigger than Capital Cities was at the time. Berkshire
Hathaway (Damn Right! Behind the Scenes with Berkshire Hathaway Billionaire Charlie Munger
) chairman Warren Buffett (The Intelligent Investor: The Definitive Book on Value Investing. A Book of Practical Counsel (Revised Edition)
) helped financed the deal in return
for a 25 percent stake in the combined company (The Warren Buffett CEO: Secrets from the Berkshire Hathaway Managers
).
1996 CapCities/ABC was
acquired by this company “that was begging to have its 1950's
show broadcast!”
That's right. This
acquiring company is The Walt Disney Company! (Drawn to Life: 20 Golden Years of Disney Master Classes, Volume 1: The Walt Stanchfield Lectures
) And that early show
was “The Mickey Mouse Club” (Disney's Greatest 3
) featuring an ensemble cast of
talented yet unspoiled young "Mouseketeers", which set a new
standard for children's programming (Forever Hold Your Banner High!: The Story of the Mickey Mouse Club and What Happened to the Mouseketeers
).
In the 40+ years since the
business relationship started, one of these companies knows how to
manage assets better than the other.

On January 22, 2009,
Disney-ABC Television Group said it would merge ABC Entertainment and
ABC Studios into a new unit called ABC Entertainment Group.
Disney-ABC Television Group is cutting off 5% of its workforce.

Mentioned in the first paragraph, "to finance and promote the building

The "another of the companies division[s]" - That was Disneyland! Long before
Disney World in Orlando, FL.
